A Multimodal Biometric System Implemented within an Active Database Management System

Abstract
Active databases have been used in manydifferent fields to accomplish many different tasks. One ofthe main problems today that still have not been solved isauthorization. In some situations it is enough that userknows e.g. password, in other situations it is enough thatuser posses e.g. a smart card, but, there are also situationswhere user’s unique physical or psychologicalcharacteristics need to be measured. In this paper we aregoing to put accent on this third possibility. We will showhow the concept of complex events presented in the activedatabase theory could be used in order to build amultimodal biometric system. Especially, we will explore theparadigm of active rules and complex events, and applythem in order to implement a multimodal biometric system.
