Compositional Patterns of Non-Functional Properties for Contract Negotiation

Abstract
Providing powerful and fine-grained capabilitiesfor the analysis and management of non-functional propertiesis a major challenge for component-based softwaresystems. This article presents an approach that relies onsome integration patterns of non-functional properties inhierarchical software components. These patterns are basedon a classification of low-level non-functional properties,which takes into account their nature and lifecycle. Theymake explicit the implementation of these properties inrelation with components. The proposed model also providesappropriate support for some forms of compositional reasoningon theses properties. The compositional patterns havebeen implemented on a hierarchical component platformand directly exploited in non-functional contract negotiationon a validating application. The proposed patterns enablenegotiation processes to be precisely propagated down thecomponent hierarchy, so that better runtime adaptations canbe conducted on reaction to non-functional degradations.
