Thresholding Images of Historical Documents Using a Tsallis-Entropy Based Algorithm

Abstract
In this paper we present an algorithm forthresholding images of historical documents. The mainobjective is to generate high quality monochromatic imagesin order to make them easily accessible through theInternet. Our new algorithm is based on two definitions ofentropy: Shannon’s classical concept and a variation calledTsallis entropy. For historical documents, our methodproved to be more efficient than several known thresholdingalgorithms by several measures.
